When I ask the cost for mast/hull/sails/5 Winches somewhere they
say X000's... I can't see how you can sell the boat at that price.
- We could not if we were only building one,the price is much better
for 10 or 20 of anything
Shipyard X told me it was X00000 to build
me a hull... I/they cant see how you can sell the boat at that price.
- We pay for the female moulds that are 4-5 times the price of a
single hull, we also pay OCD for the design fees and royalties.
Both costs are split over a number of hulls, and (eventually) makes
the hulls cheaper. We also keep tight control on our overhead cost.
Why is the Pogo 40 cheaper, what's the difference?
The main cost difference is in the hull structure. The Structures
Pogo is "Monolithic" ie single skin GRP - which is fine
for a Cruiser/Racer boat. The Express 40 is Epoxy sandwich - more
expensive but much lighter, stiffer, stronger and so faster. There are other differences in equipment
level and quality but that's the main one.
What's it rate?
The Class 40 is built to the class 40 box rule that has
a few restrictions, the full text is here
.Any performance under IRC or IMS would be purely coincidental.
For example in the Fastnet 2 handed: Pogo 40 =IRC TCC 1.27 and a
Jumbo 40 =1.22
Is she faster than a Farr 40 ?
Two different boats designed with two different objectives.
Can I buy just a hull, deck and keel to finish
myself ?
In most cases this does not make economic sense
due to the retail cost of the equipment. However if you own a shipyard or already have the equipment but need a new hull then it is worth considering.
Where are they built ?
The Express 40 is built on the Isle of Wight in the UK by a team
of highly qualified composite boat builders.
Are they Cat 0 for the Portimao Global
Ocean Race ?
YES - The design is such that she can be made a Cat
0 (structurally) quite easily. There is an upgrade pack available.
Is there a lifting keel version ?
Not right now but if there is enough demand, yes in the future
Can I modify the hull and/or deck structure.
Owen
Clarke would be delighted to assist you with a custom boat design
and construction but the build process (and the regulations - the
RCD) prevent us from making structural modifications.
Open 40 vs Class 40 whats the difference?
The Open 40 rule is a box rule with very little restriction with
regards to materials, canting keels, or sail area. The money required
to develop and build a competative Open 40 puts them out of the
reach of most people. The Class 40 rule was designed by offshore
racers and naval architects to provide a more level field of competition,
ecouraging a very fast but safe design without rule generated hull
or sail distortions. Restricting the use of exotic materials, and
build methods means that shorthanded offshore competition is opened
up to many more people.
